Anyone have an idea what's happened to my Dad's tires?

I noticed today that the tires on my dad's car are... flaking for lack of a better term on the shoulders.

I can't get a picture right now, but there are quite literally flakes of rubber in various stages of falling off. The rest of the tire looks fine, it's fairly new time-wise, not at the wear bars, etc...

My best guess is that where he parks requires a lot of lock-to-lock without rolling forward or backward. Could that be enough to tear up the outer edge so badly?

how old are they and what climate? Could be dry rot maybe?

Less than a year, hot and dry climate.

I would say the tires are rubbing. Like in the fenders. Is it all 4 tires are just the fronts?

Here is a guide for tire wear. It kinda sounds like you are talking about "cupping" where physical chunks get taken out of the edge of where the tire meets the road. That usually indicates something is pretty fucked up with the suspension.

It's an SUV with all stock chassis. I can't imagine rubbing. I only noticed it on the right front, didn't check the others.

my all stock Sport Trac would rub on the sway bar at full lock.

Find the date stamp on the sidewall and verify.

under steer is likely causing the tire to roll when he turns. Make sure tire pressure is correct and if it is and the alignment is correct, then this is normal wear.

Get a pic when you can. It sounds like the suspension needs work.

Perhaps whoever drives the vehicle is hitting a curb when they park with some frequency?

The crappy "summer performance" tires that they put on the BRZ did this to me after many donuts. I think it's because the outer edges were heating, but I wasn't keeping it up long enough for the entire tire to warm up, but I'm just guessing on that one. Your dad must be doing donuts.

If it's a front, I think there might be some rubbing while turning. Are the inner fenders all in their places? The SUV might be stock but the tires might not be... they might b wider than stock

They're stock. My dad only changes tires when tire shops are legally obligated to.

Now there's an image. My dad doesn't even get up to the speed limit most days.

It's not the sidewall, it's the outer edge of the tread
